Safety Playbook for Individual Development
and Engagement of Responsible Students
Introduction and Objective > What is a Boundary? > Setting Boundaries and Identifying Harmful Situations > Identifying Boundaries > Using Refusal Skills to Get Out of Potentially Harmful Situations > Summary
Keep in mind that we have a responsibility to respect others’ boundaries. When someone tells you that a certain behavior makes them uncomfortable, you have the responsibility to respect their feelings. If you choose not to, then you should expect to be held accountable for violating their boundaries. If someone violates your personal boundaries, be clear with your verbal and non-verbal communication. It is always okay to say no and to walk away. If someone persists, then speak to a trusted adult to get help to stop the unwanted behavior.
If you or anyone you know has experience with these or other difficult situations, it’s important to know that you’re not alone. Talking to a parent, teacher, counselor, family member, or other trusted adult can help you to resolve the situation before things become too difficult to control.
