Decision-Making: Part 2

Barriers to Making Healthy Decisions

Even when you have the best of intentions, there can be people or things standing in your way and challenging your morals, or principles. These situations are known as barriers, or obstacles that prevent you from moving forward in your decision-making process. Remember, a responsible or healthy decision is one that leads to actions that promote health, respect, and safety for yourself and others. Sometimes these decisions can be tough to make due to barriers, such as peer pressure, procrastination, alcohol or drug use, gender stereotypes, weak communication skills, lack of knowledge, and other restrictions.

Fortunately, you have the ability to overcome these barriers. You control your decisions, and you have the power to look out for yourself. Do not be distracted by things that may seem temporarily attractive, such as peer pressure, drugs, alcohol, or procrastination; instead, stay focused and remember that you have the ability to make GREAT decisions by thinking through your options and the consequences of each choice. These barriers will not lead to a healthy, happy lifestyle or being in control; in fact, they can threaten your control of a situation, cognitive abilities, and opportunities for success.
